BoiseUbuntu

Started by students at Boise State

my laptop crashed over the summer and I ended up having to install a new hard drive into it. I lost ALL my data. I ended up having to install vista on my laptop. Compaq Presario C751NR, 120GB HDD, 2GB RAM, Intel 1.6GHZ Processor, Atheros Wireless card. I installed ubuntu back on it but cannot get my wireless card to work, even after going through the steps on installing it onto my computer.. Can anyone help? Give me a call if you can, My number is 208-392-8654.

Thanks!

Roger

It seems that Ubuntu CD doesn't come with restricted drivers that's why after reinstalling Ubuntu you often find problems with wireless and display. The best way to fix all these issues is to get connected to the internet with a wired connection and run the updates. After the updates, restart your computer and you might find your wireless working.

3.1. Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy)

The drivers are in the restricted modules package; also see the madwifi-tools package.

sudo apt-get install linux-restricted-modules madwifi-tools

From what I have gathered from a small search, there maybe a faster fix, Atheros is a restricted driver, the above was copied from Ubuntu documentation on their website, if you can connect to the Internet with a wired connection (and hopefully that works at least) you can run the italic command from a terminal window, and it might solve the issue. Below, I have posted the exact documentation I pulled it from.

Hopefully that helps!

Atheros seems to be quite the bastard when it comes to Ubuntu. Trent and I have EePCs, both have Atheros wifi, and have issues with actually working. I would be glad to help if I can. I can probably do a bit of research and see I can do. If you would like to give me a call and we can sit down together and sort it out, I would be totally fine with that. 208-407-3471
